Greetings from the International Astronomical Search Collaboration
Asteroid Discovery!!
Congratulations to S. Ibryamov from the University of Shumen in Bulgaria. He discovered the Main Belt asteroid 2011 FY16. His preliminary discovery (TVPS0C7) was followed up at the Sierra Stars Observatory Network by IASC Astronomer, Tomas Vorobjov. This follow up confirmed the existence of the preliminary discovery and changed it to provisional status by the Minor Planet Center.
The asteroid will remain in provisional status for a number of years, sometimes as long as 6 or more years. During that time it will be observed and measured again until the orbit is completely determined. At that point, the Minor Planet Center will number the discovery and place it into the world's official minor planet catalogued maintained by the International Astronomical Union (IAU, Paris). Also, at that time Mr. Ibryamov may propose a name to the IAU.
Main Belt asteroids are boulders of rock that can be kilometers in size. They are located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. 2011 FY16 is located 2.8 AU from the Sun (almost 3-times the average distance between Earth and the Sun). It is in an orbit that is inclined 8-degrees to the ecliptic, where the majority of Main Belt asteroids are located.
Congratulations. Job well done!!
Keep Looking
So far, a total of 18 asteroids have been discovered in the PS1 images from March 25th. You will find the current list following in this email. IASC estimates that the sets contain a total of ~50 discoveries(常態分佈上, 應有50顆的小行星) so there is still an opportunity for your students to find and measure them(再看一次,大家還有機會).
We are approaching the end of the first week. Your students should be analyzing their 4 image sets in the next 48 hours then sending their MPC reports to IASC at iascsearch@hsutx.edu<mailto:iascsearch@hsutx.edu>. Those reports must only be sent to IASC. IASC checks the reports then prepares the official report sent to the Minor Planet Center.
Remember, too, that a new set of images will be placed into the team folders on Monday, April 4th...if the weather is clear at the PS1 Observatory on Haleakala, HI. Congratulations again, and...
Happy Hunting!!
