Preliminary Discoveries
The following is the list of preliminary discoveries made thusfar from the PS1 image sets dated April 23rd. Since the start of the current Pan-STARRS Asteroid Search Campaign, there have been 179 preliminary discoveries and 7 provisional discoveries.
Since IASC began in October 2006, students have made over 200 provisional discoveries. Of these 9 have reached numbered status. These 9 were discovered in 2007 and 2008. When an asteroid is numbered, it is placed into the world's official minor planet catalog by the International Astronomical Union (Paris). At that point, students can propose a name that has to be reviewed and approved by a commmittee of the IAU.
There are many more discoveries waiting for you in those April 23rd images. If your students have not yet looked at them then have them check the team folder. It only takes 30-60 minutes to analyze the four image sets that they will find in their folder.
